On the Shelf

Earlier this year, a group of Fuller E. Callaway Foundation trustees and staff along with Buck and Carol Melton, authors of Portrait of a New South Citizen, were invited to the Governor’s Mansion to officially dedicate a copy of the book to the library. First Lady Sandra Deal graciously welcomed the group, accepting an autographed copy on behalf of the Georgia Governor’s Mansion. As steward of the Mansion, Mrs. Deal has assembled a group of volunteer librarians to catalogue roughly 3,600 books in the Mansion collection. The volunteer group is also working with the office of the State Librarian to place the collection online to allow virtual access to the titles at the Mansion.

Now resting on the shelf, the Meltons’ Portrait of a New South Citizen joins the collection of titles by other notable Georgia authors, including Margaret Mitchell, Joel Chandler Harris, Ferrol Sams, Erskine Caldwell, and Celestine Sibley for future generations to enjoy.

In addition to the book dedication, the group was also treated to a personal tour of the Mansion led by Mrs. Deal. A morning not soon forgotten, the group enjoyed a lovely visit with Mrs. Deal and her delightful staff.
